The laser weapons, like the Righteous Authority you get from Danse, has several mod options and depending on how you want to play, makes a big difference in how they perform. When I have the right perks and such, it will get a lot better, but my shotgun has been my backup weapon since the early game. I also like my plasma rifle but those rounds are slow and rather easy for enemies to avoid by side-stepping. Not sure what your issue is but it's my second favourite weapon!
